On December 1, the tickets for the 28th IHF Men’s World Handball Championship 2023 were released. Two days later, 22 percent of the total ticket capacity in Sweden has been sold – or almost 50,000 tickets.
– These are absolutely fantastic figures for us. We know that our national handball team is extremely popular, so we had our hopes. But it is still a little more than we dared to hope for. When we started the sales for our WC in 2011, we sold about 500 tickets in the initial days and before the EURO 2020, we sold about 2,900 tickets. Now we are up to 50,000 already. Anyone who wants to be sure of watching the World Championship live must hurry up to book, says Krister Bergström, CEO of Handbolls-VM 2023 Sweden.
On January 11, 2023, the 28th Men´s World Championship 2023 begins, where Poland and Sweden together stand as organizers. A total of 32 teams participates. The reigning champions Denmark and the host countries Poland and Sweden are already ready for the World Cup.
The groups in Sweden will be played in Gothenburg, Jönköping, Kristianstad, Malmö and Stockholm *. The Swedish national team will play in Gothenburg both during the first group game (preliminary round) and during the second group game (main round).
– In Gothenburg, about 28 percent of all tickets have already been sold. And in Malmö, where Denmark will play, 24 percent of the tickets are sold. For the final week when everything will be decided at the Tele2 arena in Stockholm, about 13 percent has been sold – but it is also a much larger grandstand capacity because Tele2 will take 22,000 spectators, says Krister Bergström.
In Jönköping and Kristianstad, ticket sales have not yet picked up speed as it is not clear which teams will play in these host cities.
* Cities and arenas must be formally approved by the IHF.
